Bullies Satisfaction Turnover Conflict Quitting Time Corporate Culture

I recently started a new position, and the division head is a jerk. I have already seen two employees quit because of her, and I was told that morale is low and turnover is high because of her. I was also told she produces outstanding results, and that is why the company keeps her. Some employees have even adopted her style. This week I experienced her overly demanding style, and I don’t think I can last here. What do you suggest?

It is very revealing that the company retains this division head because she produces outstanding results, since there is nothing outstanding about excessive turnover, low morale, and high dissatisfaction.

It is not surprising that some of your co-workers have become clones of this manager, since her behaviors are preferred and rewarded by the company. These employees hope that if they model themselves after her, they might be protected from her outbursts and selected for more rewards.

Senior management apparently places a real value on overly demanding treatment of employees. With this value system, actions that are focused on treating employees with respect and trust are viewed as weaknesses.

The problem is that your conflict is not only with a difficult manager, but also with the corporate culture that supports her. Since the culture is not likely to change, the change will have to come from you. You can follow the path of your cloned co-workers, or you can follow the path out the door. And you already know the path that is right for you.
