Food Decision Making

Our company used to put out donuts for the employees, and most of us thought these were great snacks. About a month ago, management suddenly switched to fresh fruits. We want the donuts back. What should we do?

There is no way to sugarcoat this matter. For any number of reasons, management at your company decided that providing sugary snacks is no longer acceptable. Granted that it would have been helpful for management to give the employees some notice on the decision and rationale behind it, the decision is made.

There can be any number of reasons behind this. Some employers believe that giving sugary foods to employees is contributing to obesity and the health problems that accompany it, and they do not want to play this role. Employers are also concerned about the rising costs of health insurance, and if there is even a slight possibility that this type of change could contribute to better health, they want to give it a try.

In addition, more companies are moving toward the notion of being green, and this includes an increased focus on products and a workplace that are environmentally friendly, and healthier foods are often part of this mindset. On a more basic level, other employers are moving away from sugary snacks because the crumbs attract pesky insects and vermin.

At this point, the reality is that the days of free donuts at your workplace are over. If you still want donuts, you can buy them, but give fruit a chance. The changeover could be more fruitful than you think.
