When you bang your head against the culture of your company, it is not surprising that you are getting headaches. It is all but impossible for one employee to change corporate culture unless he or she is at the top.
The problem is that your company’s culture rewards employees who engage in behaviors that you are trying to eliminate. Importantly, the rewards from the company are greater than any rewards you can provide, so the aggressive behaviors prevail.
First, you need to recognize that you are not likely to change the overall culture, and your efforts to do so are likely to yield little more than frustration. Secondly, you need to decide if you are willing to stay in a company that places a premium on behaviors that conflict with your style and philosophy. When personal styles and values conflict with those of the organization, the individual either changes or makes a job change.
Look around the company and at yourself, and the next step should be clear. Since your health is now suffering, that can be not only a tipping point, but also a tip.
