Criticism Food Stereotyping Working Conditions

I have an employee who is always eating or nibbling on something. He is not overweight, but if I meet with him in his office or if we have departmental meetings, he always has some food. Granted that it is not necessarily junk food, I have to wonder why he does this. My concern is that it is going to interfere with his work and even cause a problem with ants. What should I say to him?

Here’s some food for thought: if this employee is doing a good job, it should make no difference if he is eating throughout the day.

People can have any number of legitimate reasons for eating this way. For example, there is a school of thought contending that it is healthier to eat smaller meals throughout the day, rather than having three main meals. Many people who graze this way will tell you that they feel more energized, alert, and productive. Your employee may also have been advised to eat this way by a doctor or nutritionist.

If you actually and factually find that this employee’s dietary practices are interfering with his work, causing his projects to be late, or leading to reports that have food stains, then you should discuss the matter with him. You should also do so if you find that he is leaving crumbs wherever he goes, and thus increasing the likelihood of ants or other infestations.

However, if you are satisfied with the quality and quantity of this employee’s work, as well as his ability to deal effectively with his associates, then you should shelve all of your questions about his dietary habits.
