Our company claims to be family friendly, but everyone works incredibly long hours, and no one takes advantage of the company's so-called flexibility. I want to take some time off when my wife has her baby, but several people have told me that doing so will hurt my career. What do you suggest?

What do you think is going to happen to the performance, and ultimately the career, of a disgruntled employee who expected to take some time off to be with his wife and new baby, but instead spends countless hours at the office?

However, before making a decision based on some observations and the comments of some co-workers, you should do more data gathering. It is possible that the family friendly policies are in force, and you merely needed to talk to more people. In this regard, if you have a solid working relationship with your manager or Human Resources representative, you should ask him or her about the company policy and expectations regarding time off for a new baby.

You may also want to suggest ways that you can take more time off and still cover various aspects of your job, such as through telecommuting or more variable hours. If the company is truly family friendly, management will work with you on this matter. And, if the company is not family friendly, then its claim is a lie. In that case, you will actually be doing your career and your family a favor by standing up for what you wanted to do in the first place.
