I have a great way to do part of my job, and I am convinced that it will be faster, better, and save the company money. My manager is not the least bit interested in my idea and told me to do the job the way it is specified. How can I convince him to give me a chance?



Even if there are critical standards, procedures, or rules that call for your work to be carried out as specified, there are no standards, procedures, or rules calling for your manager to ignore you. If things truly cannot be changed, he should discuss this with you.

If the rigidity is more a function of his managerial style than strict operational guidelines, there are some steps that may persuade him to be more receptive to your ideas. It will be important for you to try to understand his style of thinking and working. For example, if he is a detail-minded person, give him every possible detail to support your plan. Or, if he is quite visual, use charts and graphs in your presentation. Let him see how he will benefit by your approach, such as through increased productivity, work quality, recognition, or other factors that are particularly important to him.

You can also suggest that you use your approach on a trial basis, or that you simultaneously use your approach and the company's approach on the next project and compare the two. If you continue to hit the wall when you suggest options to management, at some point you may want to look at other options for yourself.
