E-mail

Almost every day, my manager sends us extremely long e-mail messages. Sometimes they are her ramblings about one matter or another, and other times they are articles or stories that interest her. My inclination is to delete it all, but I never know if she is going to ask me about them. Is there a way to get her to use e-mail more effectively?

Your manager obviously feels that she is using her e-mail quite effectively, so this actually becomes an issue of your using her e-mail more effectively. In a word, you should open the e-mail messages from her, read the important ones and briefly skim the others.

Your manager apparently believes that all of this information is important for you, whether it deals with specific job-related matters, or with stories that she feels will enrich and enlighten. If you ask her to be more selective, she will probably have a hard time narrowing the messages down. She might also feel slighted, and she may even wonder about your depth and intellectual curiosity.

Don't forget that there are many managers who go the opposite way in this matter and never contact their employees, whether in person or by e-mail, faxes, or any other method. Your manager wants to stay in touch with you, and she is trying to send you information that she feels is important. If you are interested in meeting her vision of what it means to be an effective and promotable employee, you should not overlook the messages she is sending.
