Policies and Procedures Communication Insubordination

I have an employee in my department who doesn't follow company procedures. She ends up creating problems for the rest of the staff. I've discussed the situation with her, but nothing changes. What's her problem and what should I do about it?

There's no simple procedure to follow when dealing with an employee who fails to follow procedures. Her failure can result from any number of factors, so your first step is to try to figure out why she is doing this.

Look first at the way in which the procedures are being communicated. Perhaps she is unaware of the procedures or does not understand how they work. When employees understand the rationale behind a procedure, it is much easier for them to follow it.

And further, your employee may understand a procedure and its rationale, but still may not know exactly how to follow it. She may need more training and guidance. Or, perhaps she has tried to follow the procedure but has encountered various problems as a result. These are worth discussing, along with other possible explanations for her behavior, including defiance, disinterest, or distraction.

All of these reactions call for investigation, communication to the employee about the importance of following procedures, and clarity regarding the consequences if procedures are ignored. In fact, this employee should understand the procedures that are applied when employees fail to follow procedures.
