Cubicles Working Conditions

My manager just told me that my office is needed for a new manager who will be starting at the first of the year. I am moving to a workstation, which is just a fancy word for a cubicle. Although my work and title will not change, I see this as a demotion. What should I do?

If you believe that a workstation cannot work, you need to discuss the matter with your manager. However, if you approach him or her and focus on the change as a demotion, or if you start talking about status, pecking order, or others' offices, you are not likely to persuade your manager of anything.

Your discussion should focus on business reasons why you need to have an office, such as the high level of privacy and confidentiality associated with your work, both of which could be compromised in a work station. It is also possible that your work requires a quieter environment, and that is not always the case with a workstation.

At the same time, before you totally write off the notion of moving to a workstation, it is important to note that many of today's workstations are a far cry from the classical cubicles of just a few years ago. Today's workstations are more high tech, and some can even be structured to provide additional privacy. If you must make this move, perhaps you will be moved by these new workstations.
