E-mail Communication Condescending Treatment

Our boss emails us about everything and never communicates in person. Her office is across the hall from me. She will walk into my office, see that I am working on a project for her, and then return to her office and send me an email to start working on it. Her emails are often accusing in nature. I have talked to her about this, and she laughs and says, "Whatever." What should I do?

If your manager walks into your office, sees that you are working on a particular project, and then goes back to her office across the hall and sends you an accusatory email to tell you to start working on that very project, she is clearly in the shallow end of the management pool. This point is further emphasized by her tendency to respond to your concerns with laughter and a thoughtless "whatever."

Her excessive reliance on email is a problem, but it is obviously not the only one. Some managers go overboard with excessive email, but yours is going a step further by including rather bizarre messages. She further compounds the problem by refusing to truly communicate with you.

Since she sits across the hall from you, one step is to take a few steps to her office whenever issues, questions, or problems arise. If she responds by email, go back and show her the specific difficulties caused by her messages, especially if they are accusatory or strange.

If she responds with more laughter and "whatever," you should contact her manager. And "whatever" you do, it should not be by email.
