We just had a management meeting to discuss employee motivation, and one of the managers said that Tuesday is the most productive day of the week. Have you ever heard of this, and is there any truth to it?



There is no real management theory that conclusively proves that if this is Tuesday, people must be productive. There are studies that come up with interesting anecdotal research on the so-called most productive days of the week, and, in fact, a recent one did indicate that Tuesday is such a day.

However, these types of studies tend to be quite impressionistic, and they are often based on asking executives what they think is the most productive week day. Although a good number of executives may believe that Tuesday is best day for motivation, that does not mean that Tuesday actually is the day of the highest motivation.

Over time, these little studies find almost every weekday being the highest productivity day at some point or another, with the possible exception of Monday and Friday. However, rather than worrying about which day may or may not be linked to increased motivation, it makes more sense to focus on the employees as individuals every day and try to create an environment in which meeting their needs is linked to the attainment of organizational goals. In this way, there is an increased likelihood that none of the weekdays will be weak days.
